Let's first take a look at the first type of reflective LCD display screen - passive display screen. As the name suggests, a reflective display screen is a display screen that is equipped with reflective material below the LCD board, replacing the luminescent material of a transparent display screen. When the ambient light is sufficient, it uses the reflected light from the mirror to illuminate the screen. But it won't work in dimly lit areas because the weak ambient light is not enough to be reflected to illuminate the screen. This type of display screen that can only passively receive reflected ambient light is a passive reflective LCD screen. Currently, color screen PDAs do not use passive reflective displays.
The active reflective LCD screen corresponding to the passive reflective LCD screen is equivalent to adding a light source as illumination at the top of the passive reflective LCD screen. This way, even when the ambient light is insufficient, the lighting can be turned on to see a clear screen.
Reflective LCD screens rely heavily on ambient light. When turning off the backlight, the display is clear and bright in sufficient ambient light, but the display effect decreases significantly in insufficient ambient light. In addition, when the backlight is turned on in poor lighting conditions, the screen will become clearer, but its brightness is not uniform. This is because the lighting source of the active reflective display is a linear light source, which cannot evenly illuminate the entire screen, resulting in a phenomenon of bright in the middle and dark in the periphery.
