Design of Optical Engine Lighting System for Solid State Volume Stereoscopic Display

Solid state volumetric true 3D stereoscopic display uses a high-speed projection optical engine to project image information onto a display body with physical depth, utilizing the human eye's visual persistence to generate longitudinal depth. The display body is generally composed of 20 layers of liquid crystal light valves stacked together, and to avoid flickering, the projection frequency needs to reach 1200Hz; The light transmittance of the display body is low, and in order to achieve high brightness image display, the lighting system needs to have a higher brightness; The transmittance of liquid crystal light valves varies for different wavelengths of light, and in order to avoid color deviation in images, the color temperature of the lighting system needs to be adjustable. Therefore, the solid-state volumetric true 3D stereoscopic display optical engine lighting system must meet the requirements of high projection rate, high brightness, and adjustable color temperature. This paper, through joint research with Shenzhen Longxiang Zhuoyue Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., analyzes the characteristics of common projection optical engines and designs a projection optical engine lighting system based on three digital micro mirror devices according to requirements. The luminous flux of the light source was calculated, and the calculated value was corrected by combining it with the transmittance curve of the liquid crystal light valve. Taking into account factors such as brightness, heat dissipation, and lifespan, a high-power red, green, and blue LED with white LED light source scheme was adopted. In response to the luminous characteristics of LED, combined with the joint efforts of Shenzhen Longxiang Zhuoyue Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., a mixed light collection collimator has been designed to collect the light emitted by LED. In order to reduce the volume of the light source, X-Cube prisms are used to combine red, green, and blue light colors. Based on the principle of conservation of optical expansion, a solid square rod was designed for uniform illumination. Using TIR prism group and Philips prism group to form a color separation and combination system, achieving spatial color separation and combination. Based on the design parameters, the lighting system design was validated and optimized through modeling and simulation in optical software. Based on theoretical design and optical simulation, a true 3D prototype was developed and tested in practice. The test results show that the divergence angle of the light emitted by the collimator is about ± 20., The light flux emitted by the projection lens is 1388.61lm, with an average display brightness of 123cd/m2 in front of the screen. The color saturation reaches 78.43% of the NTSC standard color gamut, and the displayed image has rich colors, strong stereoscopic sense, and no one perceives flickering. The designed lighting system meets the requirements of solid-state volumetric true 3D stereoscopic displays.
