More and more industry insiders are familiar with how LED displays can save energy, which mainly involves implementing high brightness LED lights, driver ICs, switching power supplies, product power consumption design, intelligent energy-saving system design, and structural energy-saving design. Indeed, finding the best balance in these aspects can achieve the best energy-saving effect of LED displays.
But I don't know when or for what reason, perhaps due to the intentional or unintentional promotion of some manufacturers, the concept of high energy efficiency has quietly been blurred or even replaced by "high brightness": under the same cost premise, the higher the brightness of the display screen, the more "energy-saving" it is, and the more valuable it is! And gradually became a valuable "cost performance" advantage that they gave feedback to customers.
In fact, in order to achieve good energy-saving goals, excessive pursuit of high brightness is contrary to energy conservation. Next, let's analyze the potential relationship between "high brightness" and "high energy efficiency".
At present, the popular 12000 cd/m2 high brightness LED lights in China mostly use large-sized LED chips. This large-sized LED chip is widely adopted by most LED display screen manufacturers as the mainstream in the market, and there is no core technology to speak of. As is well known, the brightness of an LED screen is directly proportional to the driving current of the LED light. The brightness of 12000 cd/m2 is nothing more than increasing the driving current of LED lights. However, the physical characteristics of LED lights will inevitably be: high brightness LED lights will inevitably be accompanied by high attenuation and low stability characteristics. High attenuation is not only detrimental to the long-term use requirements of LED displays, but also becomes a congenital defect that excessively pursues high brightness. This congenital defect will constantly and exponentially damage the lifespan and visual effect of LED displays.
Taking the high brightness PH16mm display screen as an example, the technical parameters of this high brightness LED light show that the brightness of 12000cd/m2 will seriously decay to 8000cd/m2 within 1.5-2 years, with an annual decay rate of over 20%. However, some irresponsible manufacturers claim that the brightness will still exceed 10000cd/m2 after 2 years of promotion, and consumers who buy this type of screen, even if it decays quickly after 2 years, suffer from the fact that the contract has been fulfilled and there is no way to complain. In fact, consumers can verify it in a very simple way by looking at several high brightness display screens that have been running for more than 2 years and have been used for more than 12 hours a day. More seriously, after the brightness has decreased from 12000 cd/m2 to 8000 cd/m2, the high working current situation remains unchanged, and the rate of brightness attenuation will be further doubled, causing the later attenuation rate to accelerate several times, becoming a high attenuation display screen. Moreover, it exists in a vicious cycle of brightness attenuation and cannot meet the requirements of long-term use.
To avoid light pollution and comply with environmental regulations, the brightness standards for LED display screens used day and night are not the same. As is well known, reducing brightness will more or less result in loss of grayscale, and the larger the brightness adjustment, the greater the grayscale loss. Therefore, if the initial brightness value of the LED display screen during the day is set to 12000 cd/m2, and the brightness is lowered to 800 cd/m2 at night, either the grayscale is extremely lost, resulting in poor image quality at night; Either the brightness cannot be adjusted to the standard requirements for nighttime use, resulting in severe light pollution.
From this perspective, the excessive promotion of high brightness value in the market does not necessarily mean technological advancement in LED display screen manufacturing technology, but rather a serious sacrifice of display screen lifespan for high current and high brightness. On the contrary, it is inevitable to have the feeling of being flashy but not practical, and being stretched thin.
