Although LCD and LED have only one word difference, their actual meanings differ greatly. Strictly speaking, LED belongs to a type of LCD. Compared to traditional LCD, LED has many advantages such as high brightness, wide color gamut, fast response, independent switching, and no harmful substances such as mercury. Overall, LCD panels that use LED as the backlight source have three main advantages compared to LCDs that use CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) as the light source.
1、 LCD with LED backlight has a smaller thickness
LED backlight is composed of numerous grid shaped semiconductors, each of which has an LED semiconductor. This successfully achieves planarization of the light source for LED backlight. Planarized light sources not only have excellent brightness uniformity, but also do not require complex optical path design, so that the thickness of LCD panels can be made thinner, while also having higher reliability and stability. A thinner LCD panel means that laptops have lighter body weight and better mobility. Generally speaking, the thickness of the LED screen notebook panel is about half of the thickness of a regular CCFL screen pen.
2、 Longer lifespan, lower power consumption, and more environmentally friendly
Data shows that LCD screens alone account for about 30% of the overall energy consumption of laptops, and the use of LED backlighting systems can significantly reduce energy consumption. It saves 48% more power than commonly used CCFL type LCD screens. Moreover, LED does not use the harmful element mercury, which is quite environmentally friendly, while CCFL contains mercury. LED is very environmentally friendly.
Another major advantage of LED is that it has a lifespan of up to 100000 hours, even if used continuously for 10 hours a day, it can still be used continuously for 27 years. Taking Sony's TX series as an example, compared to the VAIO T series using CCFT LCD, the thickness has been reduced from 9mm to 4.5mm, the weight has been reduced by 26%, the battery life has been extended by one hour, and the screen's pressure resistance has been increased by more than twice. Due to the need to increase the power supply voltage to 530V for traditional LCD tubes to function properly, while LCD screens using LED technology can operate normally with only 40V voltage, allowing for more efficient utilization of power and achieving an ultra long battery life of 9 hours.
3、 The color performance of LED backlight screens far surpasses that of CCFL
A higher refresh rate enables LED to perform better in video, with a single element reaction speed 1000 times faster than that of LCD screens. It can also be viewed under strong light without error and can adapt to low temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius. RGB LED light sources significantly enhance color expression; On the other hand, the original CCFL backlight performs poorly in terms of color scale due to issues such as color purity. This leads to LCD not being as good as CRT in terms of grayscale and color transition. According to tests, using CCFL backlight can only achieve 78% of the NTSC color area, while LED backlight can easily achieve over 100% of the NTSC color area. In terms of color expression and color transition, LED backlight also has significant advantages.
